Unlocking Empowerment: How Fertility Awareness Equips Women with Knowledge and Makes Them Experts In Their Own Bodies

At one time, women in the community understood their body functions quite well. They used the resources they had to address any issues they saw arise and the rhythms of their bodies flowed with the day, week, months, and seasons. It wasn’t crazy, it wasn’t woo woo, it just was the way of life. They weren’t busy with consumerism, chasing the American dream, they were living more simply than we could possibly imagine today.

We need to be aware of the fact that while times have evolved and shifted to a more busy lifestyle, multifunctional famlies, more time inside, more endocrine disrupting properties in our products, food coloring, and preservatives, etcFertility awareness is a topic that holds immense importance for women and body literacy. Body literacy is a topic we discuss in the public health field very often because as we well know, not everyone has access to healthcare providers in the moments they need them so the level awareness that someone has on their individualized body signals can make a significant difference in advocating for themselves. Once they do seek care, providing as much information as possible that could lead to answers can make all the difference in the distance between diagnosis and treatment. If we focus specifically on fertility awareness, this type of body literacy creates a healthy relationship in women that just seek curiosity in their own body functions and can help encourage self confidence. Whether you are in a relationship planning to start a family soon/down the line, or simply want to understand their reproductive health better, you can gain more insight about your body than any expert in the field helping you with informed decision making.

In this article, I will cover with you, the significance of fertility awareness and how it can empower women in their reproductive journey.

  1. Understanding Your Menstrual Cycle:

Fertility awareness begins with understanding the menstrual cycle. By tracking the length of your cycle, the duration of your periods, and any changes in cervical mucus, you can identify the different phases of your cycle. This knowledge allows you to determine when you are most fertile and when you are not, helping you plan or avoid pregnancy accordingly by applying simple rules. This does not need to be difficult by any means because, as you know, I’m all about simplicity and efficiency Observe, chart, and keep it moving!

2. Natural Family Planning:

Fertility awareness methods, like the Billings Ovulation Method can help you use simple rules making simple observations with simple words to use, to identify the fertile and infertile patterns of the cycle. By identifying the fertile window, which is the period when conception is most likely to occur, couples can choose to either try to conceive or use alternative methods of contraception during this time. This approach provides a natural and non-invasive way to plan a family while respecting a woman's body and reproductive health. It’s also really cool to see what your body is doing throughout the month hormonally and how certain external factors can impact this!

3. Empowering Women's Health:

Fertility awareness goes beyond family planning. When I start talking about fertility awareness, I feel like I always have to preface that this is for every girl and woman from pre-menstruation to menopause. It truly is a peek into the goings on of the reproductive health system. You do not need to be trying to conceive, avoiding conception, etc, you can just truly want to learn more about the mechanics of this wonderful system. It empowers you to take control of their reproductive health and understand their bodies on a deeper level. By tracking your cycles, you can identify irregularities or potential health issues, such as hormonal imbalances or ovulatory disorders. This knowledge can prompt you to seek medical advice and take proactive steps towards maintaining your reproductive well-being.

4. Enhancing Communication and Intimacy:

Fertility awareness can also strengthen communication and intimacy between partners. By involving both partners in the process of tracking and understanding fertility, couples can have open and honest conversations about their reproductive goals. Let’s be honest, this conversation is pretty limited when it comes to wanting to become pregnant or not. If you wish to become pregnant, then you obviously talk and know what to do, but wouldn’t this be better if you knew what to look for to optimize the chances of conception? What if you wish not to become pregnant, you’ve had all the babies you wanted to have, you’re newly postpartum and don’t wish to go on hormonal birth control methods. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to communicate your fertility and infertility patterns with your partner in a unique way? This shared responsibility fosters a deeper intimacy and understanding, leading to a more fulfilling and supportive relationship. There’s nothing like being on the same page as your partner.

5. Personalized Approach to Family Planning:

You’ll never not catch me talking about individualized care! So you already know I’m here to say that every woman's menstrual cycle is unique, and fertility awareness recognizes and honors this individuality. Even an app can’t do that. No, it can’t. It can use different criteria for predictability, but it doesn’t take into account live external factors like traveling, stress through the day, inflammation, etc. Apps are not reliable. The same goes for traditional contraceptive methods that follow a one-size-fits-all approach, fertility awareness allows you to tailor your family planning methods to your specific needs and preferences. This individualized approach can lead to increased satisfaction and confidence in their reproductive choices leading all the way into childbirth.

At the end of the day, there’s no denying that fertility awareness is a powerful tool that empowers women and couples to make informed decisions about their reproductive health journey. By understanding their menstrual cycles and tracking fertility signs, women can take control of their family planning journey, enhance communication with their partners, and prioritize their overall reproductive well-being by becoming experts in their unique bodies. Not to mention the really cool feeling being able to eloquently and adequately describe your hormonal patters to your provider! I mean who doesn’t like those perks!?
