Why Women Need to Be Intentional About Liver Support

The liver is a power house organ! Yes we often under rate this organ for it’s vitality and function and lots of buzz has been centered around the gut health which yes, plays an in important role in the overall function of each organ system in its own right. We must get granular and give the liver its spotlight. This vital organ performs many different functions for the body including detoxification, hormone regulation, and metabolism.

Estrogen itself is broken down in the liver via 2 main types of metabolizing phases:

Phase I (hydroxylation) and Phase II (methylation, sulfation, and glucuronidation). There is a third phase, however this is where the gut comes in along with the kidneys. When these phases are supported by proper nutrition, reducing the toxic load externally such as as clean beauty products, non-toxic soaps, lotions, make up, hair products, even home cleaning products and laundry detergents FREE of fragrance and parfume, we can see optimal function of these vital processes. It is difficult to reconcile and often overwhelming that we have to clear many of our cabinets, but here’s the deal. We are facing inconveniences either way. We either face the inconvenience of slowly replacing our products and every day uses with cleaner options OR we face the inconvenience of having to back peddle and heal our bodies which will ultimately end up reducing these toxic loading products and items in our homes. Either way we make choices. So choose the inconvenience wisely.

I am not perfect nor have I completely reduced the toxic load in my home. Furniture contains flame retardants shown to inhibit proper hormone function or mimicking hormone disruptors and I have yet to swap those mostly because of the expense that comes along with replacing all the furniture. Start with the most tangible ways and work your way down when and if you can. But back to the liver!e

Here are some specific reasons why liver health is important for women:

1. Hormonal balance: The liver plays a crucial role in metabolizing and eliminating hormones, such as estrogen. If the liver is not functioning optimally, it can lead to hormonal imbalances, which may contribute to issues like PMS, irregular periods, estrogen dominance, or hormonal acne. Maintaining a healthy liver can help support hormonal balance.

2. Fertility and pregnancy: The liver helps metabolize and eliminate toxins from the body. When planning for pregnancy, it's important to have a healthy liver to ensure proper detoxification and elimination of waste products. During pregnancy, the liver has an increased workload due to the metabolic demands of the growing fetus. Supporting liver health can help ensure a healthy pregnancy and reduce the risk of complications.

3. Menopause: Menopause is a time of hormonal changes, and the liver plays a role in metabolizing and eliminating these hormones. Supporting liver function can help alleviate symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings, and weight gain that are commonly associated with menopause.

Where will you show your liver some love?

Giana
